The house · included in your stay

An 1830 house, renovated with our own hands.

During your stay you live in our house by the fjord, on the island of Dyrøya. Accommodation is part of the package: no separate booking, no extra charge.

Built around 1830, the house has kept its old square-log timber walls, the Norwegian “tømmer”. Dorthe and I extended it, then fully renovated it, inside and out, with our own hands and no outside help.

A story that continues

A labour of love

Renovating a house that is almost two hundred years old takes a lot of time and energy. We move forward step by step, as our means allow, and the house keeps evolving from one season to the next.

Every wall, floor and corner carries the mark of this work. Century-old timber sits alongside today’s comfort, so that after a day in the cold or out on the trails, you come back to a true cocoon.

For the roof, we chose a green turf roof, for both ecological and aesthetic reasons: it insulates naturally, holds rainwater and makes room for plants and insects, while blending the house into the landscape, like the traditional houses of the North.

The atmosphere

Cosy, warm and one of a kind

We wanted a soft, warm atmosphere, different in every room, blending old and new.

Traditional furniture and objects from Norway and Lapland, found along our travels and discoveries, give the house its character: old wood, leather, textiles, handcrafted pieces…

The rooms

Three bedrooms: two double rooms, and the “young people’s room” with a single bed and a 150 × 200 bed, which can also sleep an extra adult. If needed, we add a small bed for a young child or a safe cot for toddlers. The house also has a large living and dining room and a kitchen.

Outside

Here, the landscape comes right into the house. A coffee on the terrace watching the eider ducks drift by, sometimes a porpoise, or the colony of terns that nests from May to August on the peninsula just opposite; curtains drawn back on the fjord when you wake up: the Far North begins at the front door.
